1 year 11 months - Played Grass Volleyball for the first time!

Monday, September 1, 2014

Happy Labor Day!!!

I went to have a BBQ at the park with friends and played grass volleyball for the first time! It was a beautiful day! No wind and perfect to play! At first I was nervous because of a few uneven grass and soiled areas. Played 2 games and felt fine! Jumped to spike a ball and landed fine. No pressure on the ankle or swelling at all. Afterwards, I definitely felt tired and now bit sore at home. No limping! It's feeling a bit hot now. Deciding if I should now ice it. Great workout! I'm so excited! I want more!

  1. Hi there, me again! :)
It is great to read you are being able to go for these walks, be back to the gym, even play volleyball, wow! I was wondering about your ROM. I am finding very difficult for instance to bend my knee cause that is very obstruct by my ankle in the space between the leg and foot on the upper part, getting an angle lower than 90 degrees still feels very uncomfortable. Also the side movements are much more restrictive than the up and down ones. How is that with you after this long? Do you keep on practicing those? For how long Is it still integrable? If you have the links for particular exercises it would be great. Thanks a lot for those you send me about the massage, I think it really helped, does not feel so tight anymore when moving my ankle to the sides. All best! M.

    1. Hi M! =)
I'm excited to hear you're feeling better! My ROM is definitely better now, I'd say around the 95% range. I diligently did the ABCs everyday, also the up down motion, left right motion, and using the rubber band as suggested by my PT.

It is restrictive at first but it gets better overtime. Keep at the stretching so your ankle is use to moving. Walk more to get use to that too. As long as you're moving it, and not over doing it the faster it'll get back to as normal as it can get. Don't hurt yourself now. Even today I do my ABCs whenever I'm sitting at work and do stretches, tip toes, whatever it is I can anytime I remember to when I'm standing or sitting still. But that's according to my PT's suggestion and the time of healing with the provided exercises as posted in my previous writings. So I'd follow your PT schedule whatever they give you and follow their directions. You can definitely read about my progress from about the same time frame your ankle is now. Best to you! Jenny

  2. Hi, thanks again for your response. I am indeed doing the band exercises and moving the ankle a large part of my day :D It is getting better, but the 90 degrees and under is where I get stuck! It hurts on the upper part of my ankle and it just doesn't move! Crazy! Bending the knee gets very restrictive because of this as well. Did you had an specific area of discomfort? Was your foot fully dislocated or only partially? Mine was completely out, insane that that can. I have my days when I think it will all be back to be fine like when suddenly I made a few steps without crutches, but then that brings discomfort (a bit) afterwards and this movement that takes forever and I just feel like stuck again .. sorry, dont mean to be negative, but what a journey this is!

    1. Hi M! You're welcome. I remembered I had a pressure pain on top of the scar, metal area. It was probably the tissue healing over the hardware and scar. Eventually the scar massaging plus all the other exercises healed it. It really takes time. If you do any exercises that pains you, you should take it easy and not force it or do too much of it. My foot was fully dislocated. You can see the gross picture I posted in the very first post I made. Sorry if it grosses you out. The ligaments on top of my foot were all torn as well, maybe you did too. So any slight movement will hurt during the beginning. It will take longer to heal as I have torn them once before from the previous same ankle injury and remembered how long it took to heal. It will be uncomfortable at first once off crutches because your foot was so use to being casted and not used for so long. So your muscles also need time to adjust. That gets better over time as well. Walk more with your crutches to assist you so you can ease back into walking and get use to stepping on the floor. No sorries needed, I was just as anxious and patiently waiting to get well. It is definitely a journey we will never forget! Just be careful! Wear comfortable shoes and your ankle brace for support.
